Why Salt?

Salt on the Table is the brainchild born of my need to create, and my desire to share what I’m learning, particularly in the areas of faith, food and finance.  At first glance it may seem that these three topics are unrelated.  But in my mind, theirs is a natural connection centered around salt.

Salt of the Earth- When Jesus called His followers the salt of the earth, He was in part calling us to be difference-makers.  Thus, faith is an active lifestyle.  Just glimpse at a few of the many calls to action in the Bible: run the race, fight the good fight, guard the treasure.  None of those things (unfortunately for the cardio-impaired like me) can be done sitting down.

Salt on the Table- Salt is in everything whether we notice it or not.  But even if we don’t acknowledge its presence, we most certainly notice its absence.  Salt-free popcorn?  Nope.  Plain French fries?  Not a chance.  Skip the salt in a batch of chocolate chip cookies?  Those bad boys are coming home from the potluck with you.  Even just a little bit can make a huge impact.

Worth your Salt- The English word salary comes from the Latin word salarium (literally, salt-money), which refers to the salt portion or allowance of a Roman soldier’s compensation, back when salt was a costly commodity.  Fortunately for us, table salt is dirt cheap so we are free to spend our hard earned cash on other things like the mortgage and smart phones.

I cannot claim to be an expert here, but I will say that I am passionate, life-long learner and a lover of salt in all its forms.
